With all the current discussion of Waikanae Beach versus property developer notions, here is a photo taken 64 years ago when it was still largely in its original state. The northern end of Tutere Street where it meets Heperi Street is to the centre left. The only shop visible is what is now the Four Square (was it called that then?) a couple of blocks to the right.
The Post Office, now The Front Room café, is about 60 metres to the right, but only the apex of the roof can be discerned, the rest is hidden by the marocarpa trees. And as far as commercial premises went, there wasn’t much else.
