Football in the English sense, not the Australian/American sense although ‘soccer’ is a widely used term in NZ, too.

inThe front page of the Kapiti Observer on Thursday carried the headline ‘Fears close police base’ which seems a little ironic since the police exist to neutralise fears caused by criminals. However, the police national office is concerned about risks to volunteers from thugs in community kiosks where there isn’t actually a police officer present.
Although there are unsavoury types in Waikanae as there are everywhere else, the town isn’t noted for violence. Nevertheless, the police are the latest shop tenants to vacate Mahara Place. Those with police matters need to visit the base at the corner of Rimu Road and Kapiti Road in Paraparaumu from now on.

inMILD CENTRAL HEALTH ISSUES HEALTH WARNING
Kapiti Ratepayers have been warned about the cognitive function disease sweeping the district: Alphabetotbia!
Mayor Ross Church has announced with immediate effect that all meeting agendas will be alphabetized.
“Council staff and Councilors have noted the confusion caused to the residents of Kapiti by the presentation of items not presented in alphabetical order,” said Mayor Church, adding, “We had previously just thought they were all ‘thick’, but now the results are in from the 12-year $800,000 Ratepayer-funded survey, and we have discovered the problem.”
“Along with advice from our very expensive lawyers, Mid Central Health,
the Electoral Commission and the Better Drugs for Better Decision Making Co-operative (who we consult prior to all meetings, obviously), we have therefore decided for the benefit of the whole district that it is better to give up Democracy rather than put our Ratepayers at further risk of the spread of this unfortunate ailment. Please note that these decisions have been made for the good of the district by us as we know best and, as we are not accountable for our actions, no further correspondence will be entered into!
“Council staff will be manning a 24-hr helpline and helpful hints are posted on our website, including suggestions like: When going shopping make your list out in alphabetical order to save on stress and confusion and ensure you visit Countdown first, followed by New World then Pak ‘n Save.”
“Our hope is that one day we can overcome this pandemic and Kapiti Coast
phenomena, so we are planning an advertising campaign to try and attract intelligent people to the Coast, but this is unlikely to have any effect until the current A, B , C cartel is broken.”

inAs the poster says, car number plates are a target for criminals for putting on their cars while they are being used to commit crimes, particularly at night when most CCTV cameras go to monochrome infrared mode. A mere $6 will safeguard your plates at the event shown.

inIn this case Mahara Place. Sue Lusk’s photo of a jazz saxophonist and her comment: “This is Fernando from the Jazz Shed who was playing a couple of days ago in the sunshine next to Mahara Place fountain, creating such a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere….
“(The Jazz Shed is run by Fernando and Luciana who are professional music teachers teaching saxophone, clarinet, guitar, piano, percussion, jazz…give them a ring 020 4093 9383 and 021 0880 4995.)”
There are some buskers, though, who you’d prefer to pay to stop. In some cities of the world, buskers need a permit, and to get that they need to impress a panel of judges.

inThere are several murals around Wellington. Wharehoka Smith designed this Waituhi artwork during Matariki 2015 on Jervois Quay in the central city under the pedestrian bridge. (WCC photo)
During our chat with Sue Lusk last weekend she said that Destination Waikanae wanted a good mural artist. This is something we thought would be easy to find, but apparently it isn’t the case. So if you know someone who is willing to do this, tell them they are wanted in Waikanae…

infrom Sue Lusk’s Destination Waikanae Facebook page:
“Oh my goodness, the rest of the country is missing out! The country’s Number One Comfort Food is apparently pies and we’ve just been listening to Paul Henry reading through the list of all the regions of New Zealand from Northland southwards, whose favourite pies are steak and cheese or mince and cheese…….!
“Compare this to the succulent Steak and Stout, Coconut and Kumara, Vege Tex Mex, Bacon and Egg, Roast Vege Feta and Olive, Moroccan Lamb, Choc Chilli Beef, Spinach and Feta……and, yes, Steak and Cheese and Mince and Cheese you can enjoy at Siggy’s, with meat from Andy at the Waikanae Butchery. Seven days a week now. With Karen’s most awesomely delicious coffee.. 🙂

inNot quite Hillary Clinton stuff, but as this has now been read by way of complaint to a council meeting, the text of this is given below. We have to say though, that compared to a venomous e-mail we saw in January 2013 from a lawyer associate of a certain local property businessman in which, among other things, we were called “obtuse”, “uncivilised”, “permanently trapped in aggression and denial” and “needing a serious reality check”, Michael Scott’s statement is quite mild.
[comments by our reader]
A complaint was made against MS and the letter he sent to a ratepayer was read out by Christopher Ruthe today.
Despite some efforts against, it was agreed to proceed with the complaint in six weeks time, because [Mayor] Church could not write a report sooner than that. Church said that what Scott had written was bad, but his action was not; nobody seems to know what that means.
Church was against any action. Cr Gurunathan tried to get Scott to apologise. Scott retorted, as usual, that he would not apologise.
Cr Jackie Elliott said Scott should resign. He said that Jackie Elliott should resign and for her to look at her own conduct. Again, nobody knows what that means.
Church assured Scott that the complaint would be heard – public excluded. Scott said that if the complaint proceeds, who will be next? The others were not as strong as he is – seriously.
Murray Bell tried to suggest ways to make the matter of minimal embarrassment.
Scott left the chamber. He was seen on a sofa with Church, Church’s arm around his shoulders, while Scott blubbered and Church assured him that they would go easy on him – seriously.
One councillor, I’m not sure who, said that if matters like this proceed, ‘they’ve won’. Who ‘they’ are is presumably the ratepayers.

Thanks for your email – I note that in the time you and your crew were involved with WaikanaeOne you achieved precisely and utterly nothing. The same was true in your time with Destination Waikanae, which I note you are not a member of. I am pleased to have pulled together some disparate ideas into my vision, one that will evolve with input from the community. I suspect your involvement will continue to be what it has always been, ineffective and mostly worthless. So thanks for your thoughts, but I will keep on leading the community towards a vision of the future and leave you and your crew to whine from the side lines. I do appreciate you are feelingly left out, but realistically, you haven’t in the time I have known you had much that was worthwhile hearing.
Have a great day as I certainly am.
Kind regards
Michael
