Wairarapa rejects supercouncil

The voters of Wairarapa have said a resounding no to combining their three district councils.

With 97 per cent of the votes counted in the region’s local government reorganisation poll, which closed on Tuesday, an estimated 59 per cent have voted against the amalgamation proposal, and 41 per cent in favour.

NZ First MP Ron Mark, a Carterton resident and his party’s spokesman on local government, said the result confirmed there was no public appetite across the country for such projects.
