by Charles and Adrienne Jansen
Given Words and Landing Press have teamed up to create a writing competition for National Poetry Day 2019 and we thought you and members of your readers might be interested in participating. There is also a children’s section and even a class plan for teachers. You are welcome to forward this post to people who may be interested!
On the Given Words website on 1 August we will publish five words chosen by poets from the collection More of Us and you have until 23 August to write a poem, which must include the five words. Full details are on Given Words. nzgivenwords.blogspot.co.nz. The Best Poem and Best Poem by Under-16s will receive prizes courtesy of Landing Press, and will be translated into Spanish for the Palabras Prestadas poetry blog.
The prizes will include copies of All of Us and More of Us, both from landingpress.wordpress.com and a $50 Paper Plus gift card.
About More of Us: ‘Families, language, fear, loss, food and the victories that can come slowly. These are at the heart of this collection of poems by 46 writers who have come to New Zealand as migrants or refugees.’ Third printing since March 2019.
About All of Us: ‘Adrienne Jansen and carina gallegos use poems and short prose to weave together the vibrant, expansive, and sometimes heart-wrenching stories of immigrants and people from a refugee background in New Zealand today.’ Longlisted for the Ockham NZ Book Awards 2019.
