Guru has seen the Waikanae Library building become a tomb due to willful negligence. He has seen a council with a staff turnover of 21%. He has seen Waikanae people hit with Rates increases of between 21 and 26% during his 3-year term.
Guru has seen Air NZ leave, Fonterra [Kapiti Cheese] leave, the Todd Group leave — all smart investors. He welcomes with open arms international exploiters who will, within 5 years move to close the airport because those paying $400,000 a section will insist on quietness. That is why they have bought on the Coast.
His councilors are certainly harmonious with him, but that’s nothing to be proud of.

The classic case of Guru empowering his harmonious councillors was when he publicly told them they were not to ask questions of the speakers who appeared at a Council meeting supporting an independent review of council performance. They all demurred.
Guru is also promising to empower Community Boards. Yet one of his first action on wearing the mayoral chains was to reduce the powers of the Boards in relation to the naming of some streets and roading matters.
The poster may show Guru on the fiddle but the Chinese proverb of man with forked tongue should not kiss a balloon also comes to mind.

I feel that the tone of the election debate is deteriorating – perhaps in proportion to the quantum of ‘daggers in mens smiles’.

I don’t think this article is fair or warranted. I have appreciated a council free of workplace bullying and can attribute this to Guru’s leadership. That is what he means by harmonious.
