As observed earlier, ANZ (and we assume other banks) has stopped exchanging foreign cash. It has now announced that its handling of internal NZ cheques will end on 31 May 2021. However, foreign cheques will still be processed.
It’s not an unexpected response to the declining use of cheques, being mostly replaced with electronic funds transfer. However, it does pose a problem for the elderly who are computer adverse and simply don’t have one (it’s likely there are a significant number in Waikanae in that category). It means that those who look after elderly friends or relatives will need to be even more instrusive into their affairs, which may not always be good.
