You know, I’m not one way or the other about masks. And I’m not a huge fan, especially when my spectacles fog up. Without actual actual undake knowledge on the matter, I am prepared to follow instructions. That’s one of the attractions of NZ, believe it or not, is citizen compliance.
However, I ask myself , if the masks do abslutely “nothing”, as quoted in this article, why do surgeons, etc wear them in theatre?
I have experienced situation of civil disobedience and lawlessness, and those can only lead to gross unhappiness.
The flimsy pieces of cloth you see on the streets are not proper surgical masks which are effective to a reasonable extent, but not completely.

They are worn in a theater to prevent sweat, spittle and hair etc. entering a wound.
It is not to prevent transmission of airbourne diseases and viruses to the patient. This is controlled by air change equipment inside operating theaters. They also protect the surgeon from bodily fluids from the patient. Patients in operating theaters are generally breathing a separate air supply to the other occupants of an operating theater.

What about the lawlessness of a government? Do they get a pass because they can retrospectively change a law after having being caught breaking it?

Just ask the 62 million killed under Stalin/Lenin and the 76 million killed under Poll Pot. Then think how many were imprisoned and tortured under these regimes.

Surgeons and dentists wear them so that spittle doesn’t fall into a wound or mouth. Even so some surgeons have abandoned them because studies show there is an equal or greater chance of wound infection (presumably because of the build-up of bacteria in the mask).

Sometimes theater staff won’t wear masks, particularly if the surgery is of a ‘dirty’ kind such as bowl surgery. There is so much infectious material around that a mask is just a hindrance. Kind of like walking around in public really.
