The Big Move out so the gallery can be rebuilt on this site has taken three weeks. Huge thanks for extra support from numerous volunteers, board members and council.

Farewelling the present building has been an emotional process. The mana of this site lies with Te Atiawa ki Whakarongotai, who gave its name Mahara, meaning memory. Waikanae Library was housed here from 1977 till 1996, then the gallery for the past 25 years. In that time the building has nourished and inspired the community by housing and welcoming thousands of books, artworks, readers, artists and visitors.

The rebuilding project with Crowe Construction, managed by Council, starts next week. Watch this space for updates and visit us above Waikanae Library at 9 Mahara Place opposite ANZ Bank for more conversation and arts events across Kāpiti.
