In a split vote this morning, the council has effectively told Mr Maxwell what they think of the bullying he subjected them to over closing it last August and have voted to reopen it!
Maxwell’s usual supporters — the present mayor as well as Crs Buswell, Holborow, McCann and Cootes — sided with him again, but that’s only 5 votes. The other 6 Councilors voted to reopen it.
The motion that was passed:
“That Council approves Option C: To establish a waste minimisation / recycling site in Waikanae as a trial, in partnership with the community, lead by the community and the Community Board, to understand how in the future, these sites could be established across the District.”

This is not correct. The split vote was around a minor amendment. When that was lost I voted for the substantive motion. I’d appreciate if you correct the article to reflect that as at the moment it’s inaccurate.

If it was subject to a division it’s unlikely to have been minor? We’ll watch the video when available and write a full report of what was said and by who.

At least the right decision has been made at last, even though one may now be diving for cover!!!???

The vote today was not about opening the recycling centre at all. This should be very clear from the wording of the motion you have cited – which is the exact wording of the only motion that was passed on this topic during today’s council meeting (and it passed 10-1). As already stated in Janet’s post there are some inaccuracies in your article that need correcting. What happened around the council table today is a great win for Waikanae residents but its a real pity you didn’t get the information correct.

Can you be specific, Cr Prvanov? What exactly do you intend to do to provide a recycling facility in Waikanae if not the one that operated until last August? What will it consist of, where and when will it happen? If you are unable to provide answers then what was the point of this vote? Just to look good at the next council election?
