The Maralinga nuclear bomb tests in South Australia of the 1950s were sold to the public with officials assuring people, demonstrating with Geiger counters, that there would be very little radiation fallout and winds would disperse it well into uninhabited territory anyway. Did it work out that way? Um, no.
