Says Roger Brent Smith who took these pics: “We have a very special occurrence at the Waikanae Estuary. First spotted by Elizabeth Taylor among a huge flock of the usual white-fronted terns is a distinctively different tern — a black tern. This lovely visitor to our beautiful estuary is the first one of its species ever seen in New Zealand. Photographers have been flying here from all over New Zealand to see it.” The type is normally seen in Asia and the U.S.A. This example may have now flown elsewhere.
