The initial fire does not seem to have been started by the police, despite their record of mindless thuggery, and Chantelle Baker (whom I do not know, before some Antifa zealot gets frenetic) has since corrected this.
However, the question remains as to the identity of the faction that came in towards the end, apparently with the sole the aim of inflaming the situation (literally) and throwing previously prepared missiles. Chantelle Baker found these on the ground. She also clearly identified on film several of those involved, who appear to have been members of small teams that were sent in briefly for the purpose of inflaming matters and promptly departing, presumably with the intention of bringing the protest into disrepute and generating violence.
Prior to that moment, the far Left had been condemning for weeks the protest as ‘bourgeois reaction’ and as a ‘far right’ conspiracy’.
When Tarrant did his psychotic atrocity, the media were full of programs and articles supposedly exposing a dire ‘far right threat’ in NZ, and seminars were held on ‘far right terrorism’ , at least one of whose participants, ironically, was a veteran of anarchist violence, presumably there as an ‘expert’ ‘.
Shall we now have the mass media undertaking special reports on the anarchist movement and its Antifa front, the police knocking on the doors of every anarchist they can identify , and seeking out those scabrous worms who had been clearly filmed by Baker?
This seems unlikely, given that this movement works with police and media as an information source and is given a respectable façade, under the euphemism, ‘activist,’ or in the case of one dweeb interviewed by TV at the protest; ‘disinformation researcher’; as distinct from ‘pathetic commie pratt’.

In America Antifa are basically violent anarchists and the photo on their NZ FB page says “burn down the government.” But as you suggest, if their philosophy is Far Left, then the paid Legacy Media will ignore their existence, or like CNN did in 2020 in Portland claim that their rioting is “mostly peaceful!” You can’t win with TV1 and RNZ – they back this government no matter what.
