It comes after health officials said the rule was no longer necessary during this stage of the pandemic. Officials say the mandate for the rule is due to expire on Sunday at 12.01am U.S. Eastern Time [4.01 p.m. NZ time].

Previously, all travelers were required to take a Covid test with one day of travel into the country regardless of ‘vaccination’ status. Airlines and tourism groups have been pressing the U.S. Government for months to remove the need for the restriction.

However, foreign nationals are still unable to enter the U.S. if they are not fully ‘vaccinated’ against covid, unless they meet a number of exemptions. Only U.S. Citizens, U.S. Nationals and U.S. Lawful Permanent Residents can enter the U.S. if they are ‘unvaccinated’, according to the UK Foreign Office.
