80% of rate payers voted against it but the arrogance of councillors and mayor decided they knew best. The didnt and dont. It will, if it goes ahead, be a white elephant for the ratepayers to keep funding.
The case for it has never stacked up. We suspect that Rob knows it will be a vote loser. The next Council needs to scrap it, and that should be easier without Guru and Wayne Maxwell.
In my view current Councillor Rob McCann’s recent ‘epiphany’ re The Gateway – could well prove the first of further pre-election ‘shapeshifting’ by current Councillors vying for re-election.
Indeed he did and in doing so aided the removal of a critical service to our community. He additionally made light of the fact that the next transfer station was ‘just down the road in Otaihanga’ – despite having pointed out to him that this distance exceeded the advised medical distance for some local people to drive and committed them to the ‘wild West of the Otaihanga roundabout’! His immediate response to my comment re the roundabout was that he drove it every day from Otaihanga Rd and that it was perfectly safe. I found (and indeed still find) that response somehwat delusional given that a range of people who now of necessity drive South to that roundabout to enter Otaihanga Rd have little understading of the turning circle required by trucks coming through the roundabout from Otaihanga Rd and heading South. Yet (in my view) a further layer of risk.

Councillor McCann’s revelation is a sham! He was a vocal and strident supporter of the Gateway when he voted for it to be built. Now it’s election time—hmmm—votes are more important…..
Thank you Rob McCann for bringing some sense into this debate
The question is how can a project escalate by 116% …. has any analysis been performed on the initial costs to ensure they were not deliberately kept low to enable approval of this project?
Why do Councilors waste ratepayers money year in tear out
Sick Sick of continued increases in Rates ….. year on year on year SHAME on KCDC

One hopes that this is genuine and he sticks to this decision if he is re-elected. He was on my “don’t vote for this councillor” up until now.

Another problem is that he voted for closure of the Waikanae Recycling Centre, we’re told that annoyed Labour members in Waikanae.
