“We want to make sure everyone in our district has access to our libraries, and overdue fees are often a barrier,” says the Kāpiti Coast Council.
So they’ve joined the FineFree Public Libraries, and have just removed all overdue fees, including historic ones.
The media statement continues: “People who can least afford the fines are often those who need library services the most, so we’re also waiving all historic overdue fees.
“Research shows removing fines means libraries are used more, increasing membership and borrowing, and supporting better literacy outcomes.
“Some fees still apply – when checking out a bestseller book, for example. That won’t stop you using our libraries though – just come along, pick up a book and feed a lifelong love of reading.”

Madness, whats wrong with renewing your borrowing, now no incentive to take a book back…

Rewarding irresponsibility, how typically leftist.

I applaud Council’s stance on the abolishment of fines. In my view this will support initial literacy in families – along with the maintenance/renewal of literacy within our older predominant deomographic.
