This announcement arrived in our inbox yesterday, as it obviously did Newshub’s, and this morning the AM Show on TV3/Newshub proclaimed in this piece:
Kiwis pledge to buy Whittakers to annoy people angered by te reo rebranding
Really? Where are all the people supposedly angered by this label, have they taken to social media to vent their aggression in the way Leftists and Wokeists do?
Frankly, who gives a Stuff about a brand label produced for a brief period in one of the country’s two official languages? (Sign language is also official but obviously can’t be read and written.)
What does annoy people is signage written only in Maori because most people don’t know what it says, and certainly almost no foreign visitor will be able to read it.
Since Cadbury decided to close their factory in Dunedin, despite it being profitable, and move it all to Oz, we’ve encouraged people to switch to Whittaker’s for that reason — a good long established NZ manufacturer.

If you’re diet conscious it’s not a good product to consume, although high Cocoa dark chocolate is quite good for you (in modest quantities).

I find Margaret Stevenson-Wright’s comment rather sad. I too would be interested to know who all the angry people are referred to by fake Newsscrub. Even our local STUFFED DOT CON local rag, the Bay Comical has gone bilingual. I don’t read STUFFED DOT CON garbage and only found out because they have started stuffing it in my letterbox again.
Speaking more than 1 language is good. I started learning French and Latin at the age of 12 and added German at the age of 13. All 3 have proved beneficial over the years, even Latin. i also lived in Canada for 9 years, which is officially bilingual English and French. It is obviously “Les Quebequois” qui parle francais but us Anglophones get on with the Francophones tres bien. I personally would be happy to see Te Reo taught in schools here. I wish I had had learned it but now, at 79, it is probably a bit late

I always support New Zealand made and ditto with Whittaker’s as I stopped purchasing Cadbury when they moved to Australia and left people unemployed. The last straw is having a made up language that is good for nothing. Will never purchase Whittaker’s products again.

It’s enough to make me go back to Cadbury’s! Lindt, now there’s an option.

Have you thought about putting up issues 1, 2, 3 & 4 of “The Otaki Eye” at all? Clever and funny (if you’re a Paleface)…
