We have a busy arts season warming up along with the weather, and hope to see you sometime soon! Our two current shows (including MAHARA pops up at Seagrass) are running till 29 October, and new show From Dark to Light starts the following weekend and features in the Kāpiti Coast Art Trail. We look forward to sharing and celebrating art and art-makers across the region with many visitors!
Our next Friends event is on Sunday 27th November in MAHARA iti from 4-5.30, featuring Kāpiti artist Sandra Smillie. New Friends are very welcome!
We also wish to acknowledge with sadness the passing of founding gallery director and artist, Robin Rogerson (1938-2022). Robin worked closely with Field Collection trustees at the outset of our long-held dream of securing a permanent home here for their art collection – now soon to be realised – then served on the Mahara Trust Board for another decade. Robin studied traditional Chinese brush painting in Hong Kong for 2 years in the late 1960s and later for 3 years at Melbourne College of Art. Her work was widely exhibited and collected around New Zealand and internationally. Robin’s last exhibition in Mahara was with her cousin, Mary Zohrab, in 2019-20, marking 25 years of Mahara Gallery history. We are grateful for the support she gave the gallery across so many years, she will be much missed.
