So true. The elites only benefit from this. It’s absolutely abhorrent the millions of dollars being squandered on so few when our health system is failing our schools are failing, our infrastructure is falling apart, etc etc. All these wasted millions could benefit every New Zealander. Shame on this destructive evil government. This wasteful madness must stop!
What a nonsensical headline originating from a railway term referring to a train run that paid well with little effort on the part of the crew. Treaty settlments were anything but minimal effort; the Ngāi Tahu Settlement had a long and arduous journey to completion.
The article states “it is important to recognise relativity money for what it is – deferred economic redress that should have been paid at the time of settlement”. It was negotiated in order that the two tribes who settled early were not disadvantaged by future settlements over and above the agreed fiscal envelope.
The majority of payments Ngāi Tahu has received for historical claims have been invested in Ngai Tahu Holdings, building the tribal capital base while generating an ever-increasing income for distribution. For the latest payment, the board has agreed for a portion to be distributed to the Ngāi Tahu Regional Investment Fund as an equity investment, another allocation to go directly to each of the local groupings around Te Waipounamu, and Whai Rawa (the investment scheme whereby all iwi members can invest money into managed funds).
The nebulous, ill-defined “elites”, whoever they are, cannot benefit from settlement payouts except as ordinary iwi members, the same as everybody else.
A more appropriate “train” heading quote could be “For if you train hard and responsibly, your confidence surges to a maximum” – Floyd Patterson
While I believe that it is your view, is it based on a belief that Maori should not receive any compensations? Or is it based on evidence and you can provide a reference to back it up; perhaps you have evidence of so called “elites” receiving payments over and above entitlements?
What happened to the full and final settlement?

The comment asks how can this payment be fair? It is explained in simple language here: https://ngaitahu.iwi.nz/our_stories/understanding-relativity-tk76/

In my view- this is a complete and utter rort.
Exactly and it has to end.
