A media release we received today is below. At one time a significant player in NZ politics, Social Credit have for over 30 years been a small party and we have been one of only a few media outlets that have published their media releases. During just the past 12 months Chris Leitch condemned the Jacinda government’s dictatorial ‘vaccine’ mandates, supported the protesters outside parliament, opposed the sale of productive farmland to foreign interests solely for ‘carbon credits’, opposed the closure of the Marden Point oil refinery and lobbied for KiwiBank to be both government owned and be the government’s bankers instead of Westpac.
The leader of the Social Credit party, Chris Leitch, passed away this morning after a long battle with neck cancer.
He is survived by his wife Anne, son Andrew, two stepdaughters Tracey and Darian, and brother Tim.
Mr Leitch was a long time activist for Social Credit having held just about every position in the party since he first became involved in 1972, a feat he was awarded life membership for in 2012.
His father was candidate in the 1960s and his brother has also been a candidate several times.
The Social Credit Political League came into existence 70 years ago in 1953 and has stood candidates in every election and most by-elections since that date.
It has been successful in getting six MPs into parliament in that time.
I have never agreed with Social Credit economic policy, I don’t believe it could work. That aside I have always greatly admired Chris, a man of principle, a man of values, a loss to New Zealand.
How very sad I do hope that future governments will try and put some of the things that he fought for in place.
