The KCDC announcement includes the statement: “The impact of the rates increase will vary between households, depending on where you live and the value of your property. The increase is mainly driven by external factors such as inflation, interest rates, increased labour costs and depreciation.”

In other words, the usual. But at least for the first time since 2007 it’s not far above the actual CPI increase. A anticipatory payment (read pacifying bribe) from the government in respect of ‘Three<5<10 waters’ explains the modest increase this time.

As reported in this KC News story last month, the Greater Wellington Regional Council announced a proposed increase in its charges of 17.8% — at the time of writing this has not been confirmed. Nevertheless, the GWRC component of the total you get billed is still relatively minor.

Those who want to look up what the ‘estimated’ charges for the 2023-2024 financial year for their property are can do so here on the KCDC website.
