A message from the council.

We have some sad news regarding the willow tree by our playground at Otaihanga Domain. Elevated groundwater levels are suffocating the roots and unfortunately this has affected the health of the tree.

An expert assessment has highlighted safety concerns given the proximity of the tree to the playground. We’re not taking any chances and have made the tough call to remove it. From Monday 15 May, the area will be fenced off while we undertake this work which should take four days to complete. Please follow the direction of our crews and signage on site if you are in the area. The trunk will be removed when the ground allows vehicle access and we will replant the site with three kahikatea which are much better suited for wet areas.
