The Jacinda government won’t risk a referendum on dropping it in favour of the made-up (by a white colonist) ‘Aotearoa’ as they know it would be defeated. Instead they are doing it anyway by stealth and her bought-and-paid-for Legacy Media are playing along.
We’ve decided because of the above, we will no longer use ‘Aotearoa’: instead it will be New Zealand/Nu Tirani as in the Treaty of Waitangi, the 1840 one.

It seems that Aotearoa is replacing ‘New Zealand’ by stealth, and what was once Aotearoa -New Zealand is increasingly having the New Zealand part dropped; as in the so-called transition days of Zimbabwe-Rhodesia, until there was no longer a Rhodesia in more ways than a name change.
Aotearoa referred only to the North Island, but seems to have had little regard among the Maoris even to that extent. It was not used by the 200 chiefs gathered at the Kohimarama conference in 1860, and was seldom used in the Maori press.
On the other hand, changing New Zealand to Aotearoa would indeed be apt in the march along the road to a third world dung-heap.
