the beginning of the Kapakapanui track

Waikanae Kapakapanui Track entrance

This is at the end of Ngatiawa Road; the track entrance is the centre of the three drives.

There was this report of a mother and daughter who went missing on the Kapakapanui Loop Track and were found after three days.  It’s been several years since we last walked it and don’t remember a lot, but it won’t be suitable for the inexperienced. The highest point is 1102 metres above sea level, a fair bit above this starting place.

a fatality on the new Pukerua Bay Te Araroa track

TatraPolish

We’ve mentioned that this is a track for the very fit; and there was a fatality on Anzac Day last Monday when a 63-year-old man collapsed upon reaching the top of the climb. Story

In 2007 we climbed the Tatra mountains on the Poland/Slovakia border (photo above looking at the border crest), and we actually found that easier than the Pukerua Bay section of the Te Araroa track.

To reiterate: the Pukerua Bay track is not for the unfit, or those who suffer from vertigo!

Obviously dating from after February 1952, although probably not too long after.  It won’t see any collections now except by the property owner.

former Kapiti Mayor wants the water meters dis-established

Iride McCloy

The statement by Iride McCloy was part of her announcement that she is running for the council in this year’s general election because of the unsatisfactory way the KCDC has been run under Messrs Dougherty and Church.

Mrs McCloy is a JP, a member of the Institute of Directors and a member of the NZ Institute of Travel and Tourism, the Kapiti Chamber of Commerce and other business/community groups.

“One of the biggest dissatisfactions people in Kapiti have is around the water meters due to the council’s million dollar plus deficit. I would work with like-minded elected members to disestablish them.”

The full statement on the KC News site

new funeral home building almost ready

It’s not the sort of business that is a cause for enthusiasm, but the new building at 17 Parata Street — where Mitre 10 used to be — looks nice from the street.  The business has been based a short distance away at the corner of Omahi Street and Kapanui Road.  There’s no statement on their website what will happen to that premises, but presumably it will be put on the market.

from a reader on Cr Gaylor

Councillor Gaylor :- comment attributed to you within ‘Penny’s Piece
September 2015 (Otaki Mail)’ foreshadowed the platform from which you are
leveraging your run to be elected as Kapiti’s representative on the Greater
Wellington Regional Council (GWRC).

Your comment lays claim to skills in advocacy, a readiness to lead an issue
and strength in building relationships — the latter morphing within your
recently distributed election pink as a ‘focus on restoring positive
relationships between Regional Council and our community’.

Councillor :- I have (throughout your second elected term) personally
observed your behaviour within Kapiti Coast District Council (KCDC) meetings — behaviour consistently characterised by an aggressive contempt for both rate paying members of the community present and certain of your elected colleagues — notably Councillors Jackie Elliott and David Scott.

Your notable belligerence on your temporary assumption as Chair within the KCDC meeting of 27 August last (belligerence silenced by Mayor Church) in my view (given that this is a role that when effectively filled demands
objectivity and leadership) further puts paid to any claims that you could
legitimately make around either leadership or relationship building
capability.

More recently your chairing of ‘The Environment and Community Development Committee’ meeting of 14 April (captured and heard on the audio recording of this meeting) confirms your consummate lack of capability , objectivity and professionalism.

Your consistent attempts to bolster (at the expense of current incumbents)
your electoral bid for GWRC and Central Government does you no credit.

You have in my opinion demonstrated an abject lack of the professional
attributes and skills critical to effective performance within either
elected roles within Local Government or elected (or potential List) roles
within the mechanism of Central Government.

news from the billboard capital of the world

Screen-Shot billboards

We’ve commented about the worrying precedent set by a certain billboard on Te Moana Road before, however, it has nothing on this announcement made yesterday about huge digital billboards on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles:

“Sunset Boulevard, known by some as the billboard capital of the world, will get even flashier with the addition of 11 new signs by Clear Channel Outdoor Americas.

“Clear Channel Outdoor Americas’ new displays are among the largest out-of-home media available in the Los Angeles area,” Clear Channel said in a press release. “The displays include seven walls standing from 80 to 87 feet [26.5 metres] tall and four vertical bulletins that are 60 feet [18.3 metres] tall and 20 feet [6.1 metres] wide with each display delivering over 1.1 million impressions monthly.” The stretch of Sunset Boulevard within West Hollywood currently contains 65 signs with 81 sign faces.
