Morena,

I am one of the mokopuna of Ngatiawa, Rangatira Pukerangiora his daughter being Kahutatara Tamati Pukerangiora. Her husband was Pirikawau, former translator for Governor Grey for 10 years. Pirikawau and Witi Rangataake, baptised Wiremu Kīngi, grandmothers were sisters.

Kahutatara’s sister was Merekahurangi Tamati Pukerangiora; her husband was Tom Wilson his first wife. Like my Tipuna and my mother Ngamate Tamati I was bought up as Ngatiawa.

There was no Te Atiawa ki Whakarongotai on the Kapiti Coast in 1839 — evidence-based fact. That name was introduced by Ngati Toa in 1990 to gain government runanga funding. They do not represent Ngatiawa.

The Ngatiawa Wai 1018 treaty claim was invited to Te Arawhiti/Crown Law to begin discussions in 2020; we had our first meeting in 2022. We represent Ariki Kahukura, Hinenui, Uenuku, Pukerangiora, Otaraua, Puketapu, Rahiri hapu and Tamihana Te Karu hapū Kaitangata. Our trust includes Tamati/Thomas, McGrath, Ellison, Mullen, Evans/Jenkins and Te Karu/Tamati/Wathrall w’anau. Discussions With Crown Law, TPK and KCDC are ongoing. We will be signing our MoU with KCDC in the near future.

I am currently at Waitangi Tribunal Constitution hearings in Wellington. If it is possible I would like to speak with Chris Turver next week when I will be back in Waikanae.
