At least by the KCDC; we expect most people will simply refer to it “the library” and hopefully the exiting name will be included as a subtitle.

Media release (abridged):
Council welcomes Te Ara Whetū
We’re very grateful to accept from Te Ātiawa ki Whakarongotai their gift of the name Te Ara Whetū for the new library in Waikanae.
Te Ara Whetū translates to the passage of stars, and the concept of ‘stars from the mountains to the sea’.
The name also speaks to the streams running from the hills making their way to the ocean and ultimately linking us with Kāpiti Island.
It celebrates our district’s heritage and peoples, and the strong partnership between Council and mana whenua.
What is wrong with ” Waikanae Library ”
Make much more sense than ” Star trek ” or ” Star road ”
Bet if I ask for directions to the Star Road no one will know what i’m on about!
Why are KCDC continuing to perpetuate the wrongs of the past? Eliminating one name, a name by which this Community facility has been known since it was built, and installing a new name, which in no way denotes what the facility is or what it has inside it, is just wrong! It’s not hard to name it Waikanae Library Te Ara Whetu. In fact it’s easy, I just did it! If we continue to replace names with new ones, then all we are doing is perpetuating the original wrong but in reverse! Come on Council, let’s get it right!
They couldn’t gift a name that means what a library is, as books were not a concept to the Maori people until those dreadful colonizsers taught them
Exactly which is why the dual name is the way to go!
K
Exactly which is why the dual name is the most appropriate surely
It is going too far. Hardly anyone speaks Māori. They did not have a written language at all so no need for a library. If it quacks like a duck and looks like a duck it is properly a duck. When did Māori suddenly become so much better than the rest of us that they have to name everything and have a say in everything ? One NZ equal for all of us!
Vote new Councilors and Mayor – one’s with a platform to remove the CEO and many of the decision making bureaucrats. Libraries as it is have a limited life. So many books on line and free
This council is still an disgrace. It also goes against the governments wishes to use English. It will no doubt also means that rates increase yet again.
