Police are working to identify a person located deceased in the water near the southern end of Kapiti Island Wednesday morning.

At 9:55 am yesterday police were contacted by a member of the public who was fishing in the area and had seen what they believed to be a human body which was recovered at 1:30 pm.

There is speculation that it is the body of Breanna Muriwai who has been missing for 5 months (see below), and the fact that quick identification of the deceased person is not possible, means the body is badly decomposed.

A rahui is a Maori custom meaning a period of respect for the dead person: no fishing or swimming in the area for a week from yesterday.
