Until 1919 this city was part of Austria-Hungary, known as Lemberg (“lime hill”?) also Leopolis (“city of the lion”), then in 1919 it became part of Poland as Lwow. It was made part of Ukraine in September 1939 when Stalin invaded the eastern half of Poland after Hitler invaded the western half. Between 1941 and 1944 it was treated by the Germans as part of the General Government covering Eastern Poland. Eva’s father was born there in 1920.
