MacKays NZR 1959

Today it is a point on the ‘Ewy’, which only those visiting the Queen Elizabeth II park will see, but 60 years ago all motorists had to stop for sights like this, as northbound steam trains began their journey from the depot at Paekakariki a couple of km to the south.

Here a 4-8-2 type Ja class hauls a train of livestock wagons, something which ceased being transported by rail during the 1960s.  For those interested in scenes like this, the book New Zealand 1950s Steam in Colour compiled from the Derek Cross collection, is one to get.
