Guy Burns, Raumati/Paraparaumu Community Board member is annoyed and disappointed at how the Kapiti recycling waste provider Envirowaste has taken away residents’ recycling bins without leaving any replacements.
“Locals have been contacting me thinking the Council is responsible for taking the bins, not realising Envirowaste manages the recycling process.
“Recycling bins have been removed without any replacement bins, now people’s glass, plastic and newspapers are now piling up.
“My own bin has been taken over 4 weeks ago, without any communication, and I’ve made over seven phone calls trying to get a new one delivered.
“I still don’t have a bin and have been forced to start driving to the tip on a regular basis to dispose of my recycling rubbish—hardly a sustainable solution.
“KCDC need to start putting pressure on Envirowaste and look at cancelling their licence to collect waste in Kapiti.”
Guy is right to be concerned about Envirowaste’s handling of recycling crates. Even the Mayor has jumped on the bandwagon of concern.
Below is an extract from a FAQ, KCDC staff provided to elected members and your readers may find it useful:
Do people have to stay with Envirowaste if they’re not happy with the changes?
No they don’t. People can switch to another Kāpiti operator – Waste Management (0800 800 826) and Lucy’s Bins (backdoor collection service – 0508 787 753) still offer a recycling service with one crate for all recyclables and weekly collection.
What are the contact numbers for all collectors in the district for queries?
Envirowaste (also trading as Clean Green and Budget Waste) – 0800 438 224
Low Cost Bins (also trading as Skip-E-Bins) – 04 298 9333
Waste Management (previously trading as Transpacific) – 0800 800 826
Lucy’s Bins (backdoor collection service) – 0508 787 753
Is kerbside recycling and rubbish collection a Council service?
No, this is not a Council service in Kāpiti and has not been funded from rates for three years.
Does Council have any role in these services?
Council approves operators, issues them with a licence and monitors compliance. Having four private operators in the district gives people more choice.

Thanks Bernie. Unfortunately Envirowaste is the only provider that picks up recycling when you don’t have a paid contract to pick up your other rubbish. 🙁
