This Brent Efford photo shows a Ganz Mavag electric multiple unit (which are now history), but instead of operating under its own power has a Japanese built electric locomotive at each end: these were transferred to Wellington from the 14 km Otira to Arthur’s Pass section after that was dieselised in 1997. This may have just been a train to test the principle; they certainly weren’t a regular thing.
