Today we had morning tea with John and his wife who have been Waikanae residents since the beginning of the year; previously they were residents of Island Bay in Wellington.  They said their Waikanae house, built in 1977, is the youngest that they have lived in; most have been over a century old, constructed with native timbers.

His take on NZ’s history is not without controversy and he isn’t afraid to confront establishment stances — he readily agrees that this makes his views, or at least some of them, “politically incorrect.”

Although you would expect that to put him out of favour with the establishment, including the Wellington City and the Kapiti councils, he said he has also been turned down by the Otaki historical society for that reason.

Concern about the general obsession with economic growth simply for its own sake — well entrenched in KCDC thinking — and degradation of the environment caused by overpopulation, not only in the Third World, but also in countries like NZ, motivated him to write his first two books, Excess Capital and A Plague of People.

As those who read this blog will know, we are concerned that we now have a forthcoming excessive population problem here in Waikanae, most notably as a result of the massive Maypole company development.

He has also written books on the interactions among and between Maori and Europeans in the early days of contact: as he calls it, “revision of revisionism.”

This year he has contributed articles on that subject for the Kapiti Independent News website which are archived here.

Most recently, he has written a piece for the KIN entitled “This racist New Zealand.”  He read former National Party leader Don Brash’s controversial speech to the Orewa Rotary Club on 27 January 2004 three times, and says there was nothing about it that he could fault.

We hasten to add that his views on political economy, however, are rather different to those of Don Brash.

Locally, he is concerned, as are we, at the central and regional government’s ongoing massive purchases from the poison industry — he has fallen out with both Royal Forest and Bird and the Green Party over that, and the disruption to both people and nature caused by vehicles being allowed — via council permits — to drive along the sand spit on the north side of the Waikanae River mouth.  (We are too, and will do a post on it soon.)

It’s good to see thinking people willing to challenge prevailing establishment notions: particularly when they live in Waikanae. 🙂

Marbleleaf

This is another of the important native species in our garden. Carpodetus serratus (the botanical name) is endemic and found in the North, South and Stewart Island.  At present it has a lot of honey bees around it gathering nectar from the flowers.

10 facts and myths on Global Warming

13 Monday Nov 2017

Posted by Waikanae watchers in Uncategorized

hot sun risingThis was originally published by Global Research in 2009. The data presented by the author pertains to the period prior to 2009.

One of the factors that the science from the likes of Al Gore ignores is the effects of volcanoes in spewing particulate matter into the atmosphere.  In August 1883 the island of Krakatoa in what is now Indonesia erupted: heard 3,000 miles (5,000 km) away, the explosions threw five cubic miles (21 cubic kilometres) of particle matter 50 miles (80 km) into the air.

Less than 3 years later in NZ there was the enormous eruption of Mt Tarawera which spewed millions of tonnes of ash and debris into the atmosphere and transformed the landscape of the region.

We daresay that these events put a lot more particle matter into the atmosphere than factories in China and India have.

Ten facts about climate change

1.     Climate has always changed, and it always will. The assumption that prior to the industrial revolution the Earth had a “stable” climate is simply wrong. The only sensible thing to do about climate change is to prepare for it.

2.    Accurate temperature measurements made from weather balloons and satellites since the late 1950s show no atmospheric warming since 1958.  In contrast, averaged ground-based thermometers record a warming of about 0.40C over the same time period. Many scientists believe that the thermometer record is biased by the Urban Heat Island effect and other artefacts.

3.    Despite the expenditure of more than US$50 billion dollars looking for it since 1990, no unambiguous anthropogenic (human) signal has been identified in the global temperature pattern.

4.    Without the greenhouse effect, the average surface temperature on Earth would be -180C rather than the equable +150C that has nurtured the development of life.

Carbon dioxide is a minor greenhouse gas, responsible for ~26% (80C) of the total greenhouse effect (330C), of which in turn at most 25% (~20C) can be attributed to carbon dioxide contributed by human activity. Water vapour, contributing at least 70% of the effect, is by far the most important atmospheric greenhouse gas.

5.    On both annual (1 year) and geological (up to 100,000 year) time scales, changes in atmospheric temperature PRECEDE changes in CO2. Carbon dioxide therefore cannot be the primary forcing agent for temperature increase (though increasing CO2 does cause a diminishingly mild positive temperature feedback).

has the council been removing sand from Waikanae Beach?

Waikanae Beach looking North

Waikanae Beach looking north

This was something Geoffrey was told today by Salima Padamsey while outside the High Court for the challenge by Coastal Ratepayers United (CRU) to the council’s Coastal Hazards provisions in the District Plan.

If so, it is foolishness. We’ll investigate and report more.

The challenge to the Environment Court’s declining to make one of the declarations CRU sought, and the council’s opposition to the challenge, were presented by the respective lawyers for the two.

These documents can be read on the CRU website here — select “legal” and then “declaration case against KCDC”.  The three at the bottom of the list were the ones involved today.

Be aware, though, that they consist of mostly technical procedural arguments under the Resource Management Act, and make turgid, not enthralling reading.  We’ll try to present an easily digestible condensation of the significance involved shortly.

The judge said he would try to present his decision before the end of this year.

When people don’t like what you have to say, they can start playing rough…

anti 1080 bus ad

The outrage is growing as the glaring cracks in our ‘clean green’ image get too big to disguise! Last week my site some may recall was hacked & a piece on the Green Party’s 1080 stance DELETED which was not clever as it merely moves the formerly conspiratorial belief in the existence of a ‘thought […]

These facades look Germanic but are they also found in Alsace which has both French and German heritage.

Pekapeka Alsace 2Our final report is on a venue in both this year’s Arts Trail and the Lions Waikanae Garden Trail next weekend: the Peter Augustin studios in Kensington Drive, Peka Peka.

This not only houses Peter Augustin’s paintings but features his friends’ latest works:

Wendy Masters – Watercolour & sculpture; Trevor Wright – Ceramic & Pottery; Ern Bale – Ceramic & Sculpture; Judy Byrne – Printmaking & Painting; Peter Muller – Photography.

It’s not just the art on display either, but the gardens there which are well worth a look.

the council’s Mahara Place open day on 18 November

11 Saturday Nov 2017

Posted by Waikanae watchers in Uncategorized

Strictly an open 3-hours; from the KCDC website:

Kāpiti Coast District Council is inviting the Waikanae community to pop into Mahara Place between 10 am and 1 pm on Saturday 18 November to hear about their plans to revitalise the Waikanae town centre.

Infrastructure Services Group Manager Sean Mallon says the Council plans to progress a number of projects within the next 12 to 24 months to transform and improve the vibrancy of the Waikanae town centre.

“This includes work to establish the cultural thread and better integrate the Whakarongatai Marae with the town centre, progress concept designs for improving Mahara Place and pilot a summer programme in Mahara Place to help bring more people into the area.

“Representatives from the New Zealand Transport Agency will also be onsite to talk about their plans to make State Highway 1 through the Waikanae town centre a fit-for-purpose local road,” said Mr Mallon. “This includes options for increasing the number of car parking spaces on State Highway 1.”

As part of the Council’s drop in session on Saturday 18 November the Council will be installing a temporary lawn for the community to host events and activities throughout the summer months. This installation will act as a pilot for planned improvements to grass and plant areas in Mahara Square in 2018/19.

Programme Delivery Manager Tania Parata says the Council has been working with the Waikanae Community Board, Destination Waikanae and key stakeholders to help encourage more people to visit the town centre.

“The summer programme was borne from community feedback and ideas on what action could be taken to improve the vibrancy area and support economic development.

“We’ll be establishing a temporary lawn complete with seating, planting and a stage area for people to utilise over the next few months and welcome ideas on the types of activities that people would like to see taking place,” said Ms Parata.

Mahara House

Mahara House

A photo probably taken not long after opening. The sign next to the gates says “Mahara House, Superior Accommodation” (Alexander Turnbull Library collection)

A short history of this one time homestead on the Main Road by Kenneth Ward was published in the Kapiti News last year

It was built in 1902 and was destroyed by fire in January 1937.

The name Mahara, meaning remembrance, was chosen possibly out of respect for victims of the Boer War.  Although the homestead became history after 35 years, the name lives on in today’s Mahara Place.
