Not only the failure to detect and prevent the Christchurch mass shooter’s rampage, but its subsequent behaviour, and publicised cases of its losing guns and prisoners have made this a bad year for public perceptions of the Police.
The problem is, however, not with frontline policemen/women, but with the management and leadership of Commissioner Mike Bush and his immediate subordinates. The unsuitability of Police Minister Stuart Nash for his job doesn’t help.
