On Saturday 13 May, the Peka Peka to Ōtaki expressway shared path opened to the public. The 10-km path links with the previously-completed Mackays to Peka Peka shared path, includes sections of bridleway for horse riders, and runs to the Ōtaki River and on through to Te Roto Road near the Ōtaki Māori Racing Club.

The path includes stream and river crossings, safe connections to the local road network, an underpass at Makahuri (formerly known as Marycrest) providing passage under the expressway, and a signalised crossing by the underpass to allow safe crossing of old the State Highway 1.

There’s also an upgraded railway level crossing at Makahuri, a three-metre-wide shared path across the new Ōtaki River Bridge, and access to the Winstone Lakes and Te Roto Road (north of the Ōtaki River Bridge).
