As 1 example: Countdown Levin will at most have 2 checkouts going. The 10 or less desk is usually shut. The deliver shopping girls are working flat out and the check out your own machines are working overtime because most don’t want to wait in the 2 slow aisles.
‘Their’ plan is working fine. You’d have to wonder why staff go along with their own job kill but…
That’s why the awake need to always use a staffed checkout.
Yes, sometimes it can be slow but I always say, “It’s so nice being served by a person and helping to preserve a job.”
You can see the checkout person making the connection and I have seen a lot more checkout people at Pak ‘n Save on deck lately. People need to queue and avoid the machines because then the checkout supervisor will need to summon more operators on.
If the checkout supervisor says, “You can use the self-serve checkout,” I say, “Thanks, but I love being served by a person.”
This more subtle approach gets the point across without, I hope, people feeling like they’ve been lectured.
