It has to be considerably more than just time spent on the 3Rs. The whole pedagogy { methods of teaching) need drastic reform. Whole language aka balanced literacy has to go and be replaced with explicit , systematic and cumulatively teaching of phonemes and phonics. Instead of the failing numeracy project arithmetic should be taught in a similar way. Students should rote learn tables and learn only one way of doing arithmetic manipulations like two figure subtraction. Now students are taught multiple strategies for these basic procedures. Systematic spelling along with handwriting should be taught and written work should be done daily with correction and knowledge of grammar should return . Comprehension exercises should be covered and instilling of vocabulary and knowledge acquisition emphasized .
Progressive Education introduced 60 years ago and which insidiously and gradually cancelled out all these above mentioned common sense aspects of true schooling should be exposed for what it is – a socialist engineering deception with no actual concern for education at all .
Real education needs to return to education. This will require a revolution .
