I take it the point of this post is not to convince us that we should be able to kill and eat our neighbour’s cat?

That wouldn’t work in the Islamic countries of West Asia as they are not really treated as pets, more as independent entities, almost equal. They’re not allowed into houses, because they don’t take off their shoes, but there’s a lot of leniency when it comes to restaurants and shop. Late one night we popped into a corner dairy in central Turkey to ask directions to our hotel. I suddenly noticed that at eye level was a cat curled up on a rack, the kind of rack you use for newspapers but very high. We went back next day to buy a bottle of water. The cat wasn’t there but the owner gave us a glass of tea and made us sit down on the couch by the stove #onlyinTurkey . I wonder whether he considers the cat his?
