That may be what a visitor seeing it thinks but it’s actually a depiction of 22-year-old TPM MP Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke tearing up a copy of the Treaty Principles Bill on its first reading in Parliament. The gesture wasn’t original to her — then US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi tore up a copy of President Trump’s State of the Union Address to Congress in February 2020. The difference is that Nancy Pelosi didn’t then do a war dance in front of Congressional Republicans, she would have had the sense to realise that doing so would have made her look even worse.
Not so Hana who has no such sense of dignity or respect for those her comrades disagree with (neither do any of the other TPM members). On a marae she would have been rebuked for a lack of kawa (decorum).
This clip on X.com by Corina Shields — who has no time for TPM who she considers to be corrupt — aims to put this behaviour in the context of her upbringing.
