When I was last in Damascus, the owner of a shop in Souq al Hamidiya, the main shopping street in the Old City, said to me, “When did you come? You should have come earlier – it was Ramadan. We’re all Christian here, but we love Ramadan.”
From a novel I read as a child about the Crusades, I have always associated Damascus with craftmanship. And so it turned out to be, even 800 years later. As at least two traders explained to me, traditionally the Christians produced the inlaid wood, Muslims the textiles, and Jews the metalwork.
