This was a Railways publicity photo from the time these railcars, built in England with Italian Fiat engines, were introduced.  It was probably heading for Gisborne or New Plymouth.

This type was used from 1955 to 1978.  See an earlier post showing one north of Waikanae.

Fitting for Waikanae 🙂  A piece of wall art we have.

By Mayor Guru in Coastlands at 11:00 am.   As everyone knows there is nothing on the Kapiti Coast for a population of about 52,000 at present, but which because of the big subdivisions like that of the Maypole company and Waikanae North is going to grow: this will be given a big boost when the Transmission Gully motorway opens in three years from now.

Its name, Maison 8, may suggest an upscale French restaurant, but it has fairly standard café fare, with a touch of finesse, at standard prices.

What really makes it though, is the setting: a nice two-story house with shrubbery partially covering the windows which inside gives the feel of being in the middle of a garden; a principle we use.

You see it on the left just after crossing the Waikanae river bridge on the old SH1 when heading north, and is within an easy walk of the railway station.
