The New Zealand Government has announced they will stop imprisoning people seeking asylum here following a hard-hitting independent review by Victoria Casey QC.
An Amnesty International spokesperson says: “this is big. It builds on decades of work calling for an end to the use of prisons for asylum seekers. The review clearly states detention at criminal justice facilities should never occur for people seeking asylum. We wholeheartedly agree and the Government has accepted the recommendations.”
