This is something all our editors have campaigned against for several years now and many articles have been posted and published in various places showing it does a lot more harm than good. There have also been several on Waikanae Watch (use the search box to find them). Poisonings in the Tararua Range have happened recently. It’s something that some (although not all) Maori iwi are fierecely opposed to, including Ngatiawa ki Kapiti which has sizeable landholding in the Waikanae/Reikorangi hinterland in the Tararua Range.
It’s something that should be asked of the candidates for the Kapiti seat on the Greater Wellington Regional Council. KCDC is not involved.
What is the alternative in remote areas that are being decimated? Poisonings? That is the purpose of 1080. How do you measure ‘does a lot more harm than good’? Asking for a friend. We stuffed ourselves by importing many of the target species.

Could you elaborate on what “being decimated” consists of? The articles we’ve posted over the past several years detail the harm it causes. There are plenty of hunters and trappers to deal with possums and the pelts is a lucrative industry.

Being decimated consists of native bush being browsed so hard buy so many possums that they die in their thousands. Especially those beautiful big trees that take such a long time to grow. I only have to look locally to see all the beautiful pohutukawa trees killed off by possums. If the trappers had taken care of the problem like the original plan was (why they were introduced), then this wouldn’t be an issue.
