A message from the council

You may have noticed bright orange berries ripening and falling from karaka trees over the last month. These berries are highly toxic to people and dogs and can be lethal if consumed.

Karaka trees are popular throughout our district, and found in some of our parks and reserves, and along the banks of the Waikanae River. Talk to tamariki (children) about the danger, keep your dog on a leash, and avoid walking near karaka trees for the next few months if you can.

If a child eats a karaka berry, urgently seek medical help. If you think your dog might have eaten karaka berries, contact your vet immediately. Early treatment is the best chance of a full recovery.
