Climate Cultist sensationalism doesn’t work when their own articles disprove it

30 Tuesday Jan 2024

We’ve commented before on the question of whether 30C [86F] is hot — in our view it isn’t, and all we can say is that those who think it is have never been to other countries in summer.

What’s curious here is that the author of this states that 29.5C is “record breaking” but then it’s the warmest January day since 1971. Did measurements only start being recorded in 1971? Really? Our understanding is that air temperature matters to pilots because it affects air density and the length of runway to reach safe take-off speeds that are needed.

Boeing’s nosedive: How greed ruined a great American company

From Henry Johnston at swentr.site:

What was once essentially a collective of engineers known for innovation and craftsmanship now operates in the interests of Wall Street

On a sunny day in August 1955 Boeing test pilot Alvin ‘Tex’ Johnston was to take the Dash-80, the prototype of the Boeing 707, out for a test flight at an annual hydroplane race over Lake Washington near Seattle. The large crowd gathered for the event included many of the top names in the aviation industry.

Boeing’s nosedive: How greed ruined a great American company
The first Boeing 707 long-range narrow-body four-engine commercial jet airliner arrives at London Heathrow Airport on April 29, 1960

Rather than perform a simple flyover, the swaggering Tex, who got his start flying crazy loops on daredevil flights on a tri-motor plane across the dusty plains of Kansas, aimed to impress the gathered luminaries. Instead, he put the plane into a stunning barnstormer-like double barrel roll that left the crowd below astonished and his boss, Boeing CEO Bill Allen, mortified that the newly crafted jet was out of control and about to crash.

It was a fitting gesture for a plane whose very genesis was the result of a huge gamble. As the 1950s dawned, Boeing was at a crossroads. Having thus far thrived as a manufacturer of military aircraft whose modest forays into commercial aviation had met little success, the company needed direction as its defense contracts had mostly dried up with World War II over and the Korean War winding down.

It was at this time that CEO Bill Allen decided to bet the house – $16 million to be exact, a huge sum in those days – on building a jet transport prototype. It is hard to overstate how ambitious this project was. Not a single customer had committed to buying the plane, and it was hardly clear that such an aircraft would be viable in the market. “The only thing wrong with the jet planes of today,” said the head of TransWorld Airlines around that time, “is that they won’t make any money.”

the NZ Legacy media is aiding and abetting an increase in racial tension

30 Tuesday Jan 2024

Posted by Waikanae watchers in Uncategorized

The original headline has a question mark, but in our view there is no question about it and they’re doing it deliberately.

from centrist.co.nz

  • Media amplification and failure to fact-check Wikitana Popata’s claims the government wants to ‘abolish’ the Treaty may escalate tensions.
  • Current media reports conveniently omit Popata’s history of political activism, violence and extreme rhetoric.
  • Substantiating information regarding a sensitive topic like the Treaty is central to journalistic integrity.
  • The long running charitable Doubtless BayFishing Classic is entangled in the politicised “Treaty War”.

Where are the fact checkers?

There’s a fine line between covering a genuine spontaneous news event, and giving cranks free airtime to advertise what they’d “like” to do if only they had a marketing budget, and for some reason the mainstream media are on the wrong side of that line more often these days.

The media have been quick to fret about an increase in racial tension post-election, but their eagerness to cover threats by members of a Far North iwi to disrupt a fishing competition raises concerns about their own role in escalating racial tensions.

In the lead up to members of the iwi staging a protest that had a minor impact on the competition, Ngāti Kahu member Wikatana Popata told several news outlets that members of the iwi would blockade boat ramps to disrupt the Fishing Classic, a 40-year-old competition held in the Far North’s Doubtless Bay. Popata has concerns the coalition government is attempting to “abolish Te Tiriti.”

It appears Popata is referring to discussions regarding a possible referendum on the Treaty of Waitangi’s so-called Principles, but a critical aspect in this unfolding narrative is the role of fact-checking within the media.

Is the mainstream media aiding and abetting an increase in racial tension? - Centrist
It’s puzzling why current mainstream coverage of Wikatana Popata’s call to action largely fails to mention his past. Image: Youtube

As of now, there has been no government communication about “abolishing” the Treaty of Waitangi. This seems to be a deliberately distorted description about the government even considering anything that could lead to a referendum, not on eliminating the Treaty but on limiting the Treaty “mission creep” by activists.

Also omitted from the current mainstream reporting is Popata’s history of extremism. He was convicted in 2009 of assaulting former Prime Minister John Key at Waitangi. He was then convicted of assault in 2011 in relation to a drunken robbery. He was also a Labour party advisor on race in 2019; another omission in the current reporting.

Tennis: Australian Open Finals

30 Tuesday Jan 2024

You guys really make me feel at home. –Jannik Sinner to the packed house at Rod Laver Arena after the men’s final

Easy win for Sabalenka

By Roger Childs

Over a million spectators passed through the gates for this year’s tournament. After two weeks of quality tennis the singles finals promised much. However, the women’s contest was a very one-sided affair the as defending champion demolished the twelfth seed Qinwen Zhang. The young Chinese player was out of her depth. As so often happens, many of the women’s seeds had dropped out in the early rounds and Zhang had not played any top ten player in her road to the final.

Number 2 seed Aryna Sanalenka had tougher matches on her journey through and had comfortably disposed of American fifth seed and ASB Classic winner, Coco Gauff, in her semi-final.

In the final the tall, strong Belarussian quickly disposed of the promising Chinese. Sabalenka’s reliable serve and powerful, well placed ground strokes proved too much for the  21 year old Zhang. The latter demonstrated her potential with some strong forehands and held her serve five times in the two sets, but lacked consistency and made too many unforced errors.

In the end the defending champion won 6-3 6-2 in what was a disappointing final for the packed house at Rod Laver Arena last Saturday.

The lead-up to the men’s final

Daniil Medvedev had been the beaten finalist in 2021 and 2022 and was looking to be third time lucky in 2024. But he had been pushed to five sets in round two by Finnish star Emil Ruusuvuori and lost the first two 5-7 3-6. In the end he showed his fighting qualities and determination to win the last three sets and took the decider 6-0. His semi-final against the in-form German Sacha Zverev was another five setter, but the Russian again prevailed winning the last three sets.

These tough matches meant that Medvedev faced Jannik Sinner in the final having played nearly 5 hours more tennis than his opponent. The Italian had only dropped one set on his road to the final and that was to the number one seed Novak Djokovic in his semi-final.

The contrasting early round experiences meant that Medvedev was likely to tire faster in the final, and would be hoping to dispatch his younger opponent in three sets. Some pundits thought that Sinner may have played his best tennis in eliminating Djokovic, and might not be able to cope with his more experienced opponent in the final.

Going the full distance

The Russian looked as if his desire for a quick victory was going to pay off. He won the first two sets 6-3 6-3 with his more reliable serve, the ability to break Sinner’s service three times and his powerful, more accurate ground strokes. The Italian couldn’t settle into a rhythm and made far too many unforced errors.

The third set was going to be crucial – if he could win it the Russian would be crowned champion, whereas the Italian had to win it to stay in the match. At 5-4 to Sinner and Medvedev serving, it seemed as if this vital set would go to a tiebreak. But unexpectedly the Italian, who was now playing top quality tennis, broke the Russians serve to take the match into a fourth set.

The spectators, especially the many Italian fans waving green, white and red flags, were delighted. Many Sinner fans were dressed as carrots reflecting the colour of the Italian finalist’s hair. One fan had “I am a Sinner” on his T shirt. Russian born Medvedev is “stateless” when he plays tennis because of the Ukraine War, so his fans could not flourish Russian flags.

Medvedev was clearly staring to tire but battled on. Meanwhile Sinner was now playing consistently reliable tennis and kept his Russian opponent on the move. Even though the Medvedev continued to serve well and play many excellent, well-placed shots, he lacked the energy he has displayed in the first two sets. There was a growing sense of inevitability, as Sinner’s service was now winning him more points and his better placements had the Russian scrambling.

The momentum had clearly shifted and the Italian took the finals sets 6-4, 6-3 to win his first grand slam. He showed he could take the pressure and weather the storm of losing the first two sets. “There is always pressure, but the pressure is something good. You have to take it in a good way. It’s a privilege, no?”

He is the first Italian, male or female, to win the Australian Open. It’s a great way to start the 2024 season. Sinner still remains the fourth ranked male player behind Djokovic, Alcaraz and Medvedev, but could well move up as the year unfolds.

Many paper straws contain toxic ‘forever chemicals’

30 Tuesday Jan 2024

by Peter Imanuelsen

Remember how it was suddenly decided that we had to stop using plastic straws to save the environment?

Thanks to climate change fanatics we are now forced to drink from useless paper straws that turn soggy and taste horrible after just a few sips. I cannot tell you enough how annoying those things are.

But it was all for good we were told. It would be good for the environment they said. Save the turtles!

Turns out that it might have been all for nothing.

Researchers have found that a whopping 90% of paper straws contain toxic forever chemicals called PFAS (poly and perfluoroalkyl substances). They tested lots of different straws and found PFAS in plant based straws such as paper and bamboo.

“The presence of PFAS in plant-based straws shows that they are not necessarily biodegradable and that the use of such straws potentially contributes to human and environmental exposure of PFAS.” the paper said.

PFAS were found in plastic straws too, but at lower levels than in the paper straws. The only straw that din’t contain the chemicals was stainless steel.

What’s even worse is that PFAS are known to be water soluble. This means that they can bleed from the paper straw into the drink. So we could potentially be getting high doses of this toxic chemical here.

What are PFAS?

I did some research into these chemicals and what I found was SHOCKING. Why are we being told to drink from straws that contain these chemicals?

It doesn’t make sense. It’s good for the environment they said. But they contain toxic chemicals that can actually affect fertility in both men and women!

report on the weekend Lions Garden Trail

29 Monday Jan 2024

Posted by Waikanae watchers in Uncategorized

Of the 12 featured this year, 10 were new to us and it’s revealing in more than one sense what people manage to create behind hedges or fences that you pass regularly without a second thought.

In fact, not just the properties on the trail, but others nearby had clearly paid attention to their curb appeal and it’s nice to think that our regular featuring of this consideration has inspired some to do that.

Another aspect was that most of the gardens had vegetable patches as well as flower displays and again we’d like to think our regular ‘Gardening with Wally’ feature had had an influence. Of course, it’s also likely that the big increase in the cost of vegetables in the stores has prompted folks to do this.

The best gardens are those that also have mature trees and Waikanae is noted for them, especially in what is known as the ‘Garden Zone’ — the eastern half of Te Moana Road and the immediate streets on both sides of it.

The weather over the first 4 hours on the Saturday was wet before it fined up with sunny periods. On Sunday it was overcast all day. However, sometimes when taking garden photos that can be useful as the diffuse light reduces the hard contrast between sunlit and shaded parts of the vegetation.

We’ll post more pics over the next week or so.

SULPHUR

There is a range of minerals and elements which plants need to have to be healthy and grow well; one of these is sulphur, chemical symbol S. (The below bit is from the Internet)

Sulfur is an essential nutrient in crop production. It is classified as a secondary element, along with Mg and Ca, but it is sometimes called “the 4th major nutrient”.

Some crops can take up as much S as P. Sulfur has become more important as a limiting nutrient in crop production in recent years for several reasons. These include higher crop yields that require more S, less S impurities in modern fertilizers, less use of S-containing pesticides, reduced industrial S emissions to the atmosphere, and a greater awareness of S needs.

Sulfur serves many functions in plants. It is used in the formation of amino acids, proteins, and oils. It is necessary for chlorophyll formation, promotes nodulation in legumes, helps develop and activate certain enzymes and vitamins, and is a structural component of two of the 21 amino acids that form protein.

The crop’s need for S is closely associated with N.

The relationship between S and N is not surprising since both are components of protein and are involved in chlorophyll formation. They are also linked by the role of S in the conversion of nitrate to amino acids.

Crops having high N need will usually also have high S needs. (My comment is that vegetables or plants that are gross feeders requiring plenty of nitrogen should have sulphur available in the soil.

The majority of S in most soils is contained in organic matter. Organic S must be mineralized to the inorganic sulfate anion before it can be taken up by crops. Organic matter decomposition and the resulting S release is affected by temperature and moisture, and generally conditions that favor crop growth also favor mineralization and release of S, although this may be less likely with cool season crops.

Sulfate, like most anions, is somewhat mobile in soils and therefore subject to leaching. Soil conditions where S is most likely to be deficient are low organic matter levels, coarse (sandy) texture with good drainage, and high rainfall conditions.

But, these are generalizations and S can be deficient under other conditions as well. The best and easiest way to ensure that your plants have sulphur is to apply a light dressing of Gypsum to the soil. Gypsum is sulphur combined with calcium which makes it pH neutral.

Sulphur on its own will acidify the soil.

We also need very regular amounts of sulphur and 50 odd years ago we were able to get it from vegetables we purchased from our ‘Green Grocer’ because of the natural way market gardeners grew their produce back then.

‘Flowers of Sulpur’, the yellow powder stuff, mostly comes from volcanos. There is another form of sulphur which is extracted from plants or trees commonly called organic sulphur, officially ‘Methylsulfonylmethane’ or as most prefer to call it, MSM.

MSM is distilled from DMSO (Dimethylsulfoxide ) to obtain the white crystal powder. DMSO is a bio product from Pine Trees in the pulping of the wood.

From the internet:

People take MSM by mouth or apply it to the skin, mostly using it to lessen inflammation.

They take MSM to help to relieve pain or swelling from:

  • Osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis
  • Bursitis, tendinitis, or tenosynovitis

People also apply MSM to the skin to try to treat problems such as:

  • Scar tissue or stretch marks
  • Wrinkles
  • Wind or sun burn
  • Wounds, cuts, or abrasions
  • Rosacea

Or they may take it to try to treat gastrointestinal problems such as:

  • Chronic constipation
  • Ulcers
  • Diverticulosis (a bowel disease)
  • Hemorrhoids

I learnt about MSM over 20 years ago. Basically we like plants, need a small amount of sulphur on a daily bases and once when our commercially grown food chain was full of nutritional goodness we got all the sulphur our bodies needed.

Nowadays gardeners who grow a good amount of their food will get their daily sulphur requirements, especially if they use gypsum in their vegetable patch and under fruit trees and vines. Gypsum is often sold as Clay Breaker as it is great for converting heavy clay soils into easy work soil/clay.

I have promoted MSM through some of my books, on the Gardenews web site and in articles such as this. The reason I have brought up the subject is that I had a phone conversation this week with a reader who was purchasing three of the 500 gram pouches of MSM from our mail order website. She told me that her niece suffered with acne. (Acne is a common skin condition that happens when hair follicles under the skin become clogged.) Sebumoil that helps keep skin from drying outand dead skin cells plug the pores, which leads to outbreaks of lesions, commonly called pimples or zits (in case you didnt know).

She told me that her niece would dissolve a quarter teaspoon of the MSM crystal powder into a couple of hundred mils of hot non chlorinated water and then with her finger she dabs the liquid onto her face and acne. It cleared up the acne very quickly and her niece continued using on her face morning and night.

The result I was told is a radiant complexion and a reduction in skin blemishes and wrinkles. I had never thought of using MSM topically till our conversation.

I was also told that my caller had recently come back from Australia where she had taken MSM with her on the trip. MSM dissolved in water as above is excellent in stopping the itchiness of mosquito bites and other insect bites; it gives instant relief. But that’s not all (like they say in marketing), she said you take some of MSM dissolved in water into an eye dropper and apply it as a wash for your eyes. She said it clears your vision and improves your eyes. [We suggest using Optrex from the supermarket or chemist rather than do this —Eds] Also I was told use a few drops in the ear for earache.

Women who have taken MSM orally have often reported that their complexion has improved, in particular hair, skin and nails, which is why it is often referred to as Nature’s Beauty Element. It’s great to sprinkle on the food of your pets for their coats and health. Some horse owners give it to their horses in their feed bags, I have been told.

It’s available on www.0800466464.co.nz under the link Well Being Products. (I’m not sure if you are allowed to say Health Products anymore unless you jump through all the bureaucratic hoops and controls.)
