In the context of the Cold War against the Soviet Empire and the superpower rivalry which lasted till the early 1990s, this made sense: America wanted maximum countries favourable to itself. But while ousting disastrous, repressive Communist regimes is a good thing, replacing them with equally if not more nasty military juntas is not.

The CIA has no problem with thug regimes provided they are their thugs as currently in Ukraine. The problem with Ukraine is that the Zelensky regime has published a hit list of 300+ American political enemies in the Republican Party’s Trump campaign, including Trump himself — not the most sensible thing to do?
