The main sweetener in America for soft drinks has long been high fructose corn syrup. Sugarcane is generally grown in the tropics, in America mainly in Florida. It used to be a big crop in Hawaii but the industry collapsed in 2017.
In NZ / Oz sugar has always been used, a major industry in Queensland and the north of NSW. How much is exported we know not.
