It is all starting to resemble a comic opera: maybe if Denmark’s Leftist PM, Mette Frederiksen, hadn’t been so obsessed with Project Ukraine to the exclusion of everything else she could have organised a referendum in the last 12 months in Greenland on who the inhabitants want to belong to: Denmark, the US or no-one, but she didn’t. Denmark colonised Greenland in 1721 — the word that triggers neo-Marxists — but what does it want this huge piece of ice covered rock now for? It comes at a cost as Denmark has to subsidize the island’s budget by about $US 600 million a year.
Why does Trump want it? That’s simple — it has nothing to do with security, or even mining: rather it’s to expand the size of the US. It has Alaska in the west, something of similar size (geographically) in the east would match it. The problem is that 57,000 people is far from enough for statehood, and the US would have to spend the same or more as Denmark does. At present Greenlanders get free healthcare under Denmark’s extensive welfare state which, as everyone knows, Americans don’t — that will be a major reason why they prefer to be part of Denmark. There are probably more welfare benefits.
But there are skeletons in Ms Frederiksen’s closet:

And do they really hate Trump?
It’s never about what the citizens want, it’s what the politicians want.
