Zugzwang: (German: “compulsion to move”, pronounced ‘tsooktsvaang’): a chess term describing a situation where a player is put at a disadvantage because it is their turn to move. Any move they make weakens their position or leads to loss, whereas not moving would be better, but passing is not allowed.

Beyond chess it’s when anything you do will make the situation worse, and you don’t have the option of not making a choice.
