The KCDC has begun the search for land for a new cemetery, with the Waikanae Cemetery expected to run out of space in about 4 years from now. Council data from 2024 estimated Waikanae Cemetery had enough burial room until 2030-2033.

“However, population growth — and external factors such as a catastrophic event in the region — could significantly alter that timeline.”

The council has now begun a district-wide land assessment to identify a suitable site for a new cemetery. Parks, open space and environment manager Gareth Eloff said once Waikanae reached capacity, pressure would fall on the remaining cemeteries. Securing new land could be a lengthy process so planning ahead was essential.

What kind of ‘catastrophic event’ are they thinking of — an earthquake? World War 3? —Eds.
