It was the German city of Danzig until 1945 when on Stalin’s orders the Germans were expelled and replaced with Poles. The city was badly damaged in the war, but the Poles put a lot of effort into restoring a large part of it to the way it was. Unlike in western Europe, Polish cities are for the most part clean and safe.
