Kapiti Coast Nicholas Chevalier 1884

Nicholas Chevalier (9 May 1828 – 15 March 1902) was born in St Petersburg, Russia, and worked in Australia and New Zealand.

This view shows a real mixed bag of weather which, as we have observed, is quite common in NZ, and depicts waka (canoes) on the beach.  At the time these, European sailboats and horses were the main forms of transport on the Kapiti Coast.  That changed when the railway was opened in 1886.
